Project Description

In a thoughtful departure from the large-block developments of Surrey’s Guildford neighbourhood, the Arboretum Co-operative design introduces a dense yet permeable “pinwheel” of four buildings. Designed to quadruple the existing household capacity, the project prioritizes social resilience by rethinking circulation: by eliminating traditional internal corridors, the design gives every home a front door that opens directly onto communal walkways and private balconies overlooking a shared central courtyard. This “open-air” approach, paired with integrated amenities like workshops, music rooms, and community gardens, is engineered to foster happenstance interactions and neighbourly bonds. With below-grade parking for child safety and dual-aspect suites that prioritize natural light, the Arboretum stands as a vibrant, family-focused model for collective living.
