BCIT Biomass Energy

As the first facility of its kind in Metro Vancouver, the BCIT Biomass Education Centre was designed as a high-performance showpiece for the university’s evolving curriculum. Situated along a prominent campus pedestrian spine as an addition to the existing joinery building, the facility creates a closed-loop system by converting wood waste from the carpentry trade schools into renewable energy. The architecture itself acts as a pedagogical tool; by linearly organizing and displaying the biomass process through its materiality, the building transforms a complex mechanical system into a visible, educational experience for students and passersby. It is a functional anchor that serves as a literal and metaphorical “visual cue” for the campus’s commitment to sustainable district energy.
