Project Description

The Buchanan Courtyards project reinvents two aged 1960s spaces at the heart of UBC’s Faculty of Arts, transforming them into a dual landscape of celebration and contemplation. A 50-foot-span folded concrete pavilion serves as a “psychic refuge” and a civic stage for the exchange of ideas. The structure rests within a reflecting pool where typeset quotations create a permanent visual expression of the Arts. By integrating “slouch and perch” seating with comprehensive stormwater harvesting, the design balances functional infrastructure with poetic detail. As critic Trevor Boddy notes, the pavilion’s elegant, tapered form offers a welcoming departure from the surrounding campus architecture—a sophisticated sanctuary engineered for a vibrant academic community.
