SFU Plaza Renewal

The Erickson / Massey SFU campus remains among Canada’s most significant architectural achievements. After fifty years of hosting convocations and protests, the central Academic Quadrangle and Convocation Mall required significant renewal. Public Architecture addressed critical infrastructure failures by replacing membranes that threatened the learning spaces below, while simultaneously reimagining the public realm. The design concept, “Enlightened Ascension,” charts a student’s journey of discovery through a gradient shift in the tone of stone tiles, moving from dark granite at the campus gateway to lighter hues at the mountain’s summit. Through insertions such as the typographic memorial at Freedom Square, the project preserves the 1960s cultural heritage of dialogue and interdisciplinary work for generations to come.
